Welcome to the official website for Harvard South Shore (HSS), one of five ACGME-accredited four-year psychiatry residencies affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Our program combines the stable and expanding financial sponsorship of the VA Boston Healthcare System with diverse training at Harvard-affiliated sites to prepare residents for careers in any healthcare setting. HSS is a medium sized program (8 residents per year), which optimizes personal career development. Here, you can access a wealth of information about HSS. If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Mission
At Harvard South Shore we cultivate the development of psychiatrists who are dedicated to evidence-based, compassionate, patient-centered care, innovative research, and global leadership. By mobilizing Harvard and VA resources, and drawing upon our diverse backgrounds, we generate a supportive environment for academic excellence that fosters superior clinical care and discovery.
Spotlight on Residents
Diversity Statement
It is our vision to build upon and expand the diversity within HSS. To do so, we aim to cultivate an inclusive work and learning environment where all residents, faculty, and staff are fully engaged and empowered to become caring physicians, scholars and leaders.
At a core level, inclusion for us means that individuals are respected and valued such that they have both the freedom and the desire to engage fully in the program.
At HSS we embrace the mission to continuously strengthen a shared culture of inclusion, where a person’s identity is protected and valued to the fullest. We humbly acknowledge that this requires thoughtful commitment by all members of the community.
Further, we assert that anti-racism and a commitment to social justice are core competencies for physicians, including resident physicians.
Our Philosophy
The Harvard South Shore Psychiatry Residency Training Program (HSS) prepares residents for highly rewarding careers in psychiatry. Our program philosophy is that graduating physicians need strong training not only in the fundamentals of psychiatry, psychotherapy, and pharmacology, but also in research literacy, teaching skills, and leadership development. Across the four years of residency, residents’ aptitude in each of these domains builds significantly.
This five-dimension approach sets us apart from other training programs as we have strong programs in each. The PGY-4 year consists solely of electives, enabling each resident to define his or her own academic curriculum. Beyond our strong didactic and experiential learning curriculum, HSS is exceptional in its commitment to diversity. Our residents come from a variety of backgrounds and each resident brings unique talents and strengths which create a vibrant, supportive educational environment.
