Dear Prospective Applicant,
As we face an overwhelming shortage of mental health practitioners across the country, it has never been so important to be a psychiatrist. With rising costs and barriers to access, the opportunities to innovate and lead the future of healthcare are great. At the Harvard South Shore Psychiatry Residency Training Program we have combined the academic richness of our Harvard Medical School faculty and affiliated hospitals with the extensive resources and leadership opportunities of the VA Boston Healthcare System.
As the new Program Director of Harvard South Shore, I’m pleased to share my enthusiasm about the future of our program and the unique opportunities that are available. I joined VA Boston after serving as the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health at the VA Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics, the largest free-standing VA Mental Health rehabilitation center in the country. Prior to joining the VA in 2016 I was the Associate Program Director of the Psychiatry Residency at the Cleveland Clinic where I worked clinically as a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist. I completed my psychiatry training at Duke and my undergraduate medical education at Washington University in St. Louis.
At Harvard South Shore you will find exceptionally trained faculty mentors who have a love of teaching. You will also find the most thoughtful, team-oriented, and innovative residents a program could have. Our residents are dedicated to supporting the well-being of one another, leading the development of innovative solutions to healthcare problems, and most importantly delivering exceptional healthcare to our Veterans and patients throughout greater Boston.
All of the Harvard Psychiatry residency programs are outstanding, each with unique strengths. We welcome you to learn more about Harvard South Shore!
Sincerely,
Margo C. Funk, M.D., M.A.

Dear HSS Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Harvard South Shore Psychiatry Residency Training Program. We are delighted to share our enthusiasm for the program with you.
By way of introduction, I am Professor and Chair of Harvard Psychiatry at the VA Boston Healthcare System. A graduate of Yale College and the Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, I completed training in General Adult Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine where I was subsequently a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. My clinical research career has been dedicated to the identification and treatment of the substance use disorders in the obstetric, medical, and emergency room settings. Having been active as both a clinician and researcher in transplantation psychiatry, I am currently Chief of the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Service at the West Roxbury campus.
I have had the privilege of working at some of the best academic medical centers in America, and I am pleased to count VA Boston Healthcare to be among them. The VA is the nation’s largest integrated health system, offering comprehensive services to eligible veterans. And, as a recent RAND Corporation study of health care quality shows, the VA health system provides care that is higher in quality than what is offered elsewhere in communities across the nation. Fortunately, the VA is also the nation’s largest educator of health care professionals in the United States.
Thus, the Harvard South Shore Psychiatry Residency could be the ideal setting for the candidate who is interested in achieving clinical and academic excellence. Faculty and staff are dedicated to patient care and to your education. We are committed to working with you so that your potential will have its fullest expression. Please feel free to be in touch if you would like any other information as you consider your training options.
With best wishes,
Grace Chang, M.D., M.P.H.
